The Grim Reaper

This another one of history's "genius" legends. What a fucking badass the Grim Reaper is, man. The ONE guy who never takes any shit from anyone.... No wonder people listen to metal music - they want to have this guy on their side.

The personification of death has been told and retold in many forms - He is often portrayed as a bearded and winged man, but has also been portrayed as a young boy in Greek folklore. In Polish folklore, Death is genderless. The most popularized persona of Death, originating from Celtic folklore - is a skeleton weilding a scythe.

Nice. Check this out:

This is the cover of an 1892 issue of "Le Petit Journal". Imagine picking up your copy of the newspaper, and seeing THAT on the cover. Fuck.

Fuck - a movie about a Young boy who becomes the grim reaper would be cool as shit. Shotgun copyright on that script!

Excalibur

So, there was this awesome sword....

Hahaha, I realized as I typed it - that is such a good way to begin a story. It'd have me hooked.

Anyways, there was this awesome sword. This dude, named King Arthur - was given Excalibur by the Lady in the Lake, or something. And then later there was another sword or something, and it got stuck in a stone, and only Arthur, the true king could remove it. Ok, so I guess that wasn't such a great story. But seriously, go read about English folklore, its amazing.

Also, remember that game Excalibur? You might have played it in "Primary School" or something, you use cards - and those cards have weapons on them - its kind of like a larger-group game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. One guy would have Excalibur on his card, and if you were unlucky enough to challenge that guy, you'd - I dunno "lose", or some shit. Its better if you just remember it.

Anyways, Excalibur.

Folklore, pt. 1

I have a deep fascination with old legends and folklore, you know, the type of local stories many "ole timey" parents probably told their children at night, such as stories about the boogeyman or the Jersey devil. Most of them are very obviously made up, but its cool to think about the possibility of maybe some of them being... true!

This will be my first of hopefully many more posts retelling my favourite old legends from the past. This one is about the "Green Children of Woolpit".

So, scholarly accounts of this date back to Suffolk, England in the 12th century, during the reign of King Stephen. It concerns two children, a boy and a girl, who one day mysteriously appeared in the village of Woolpit, without any explanation. The childrens' hair and skin had a green tinge, and they spoke in an incomprehensible language never encountered before.

Apparently the boy soon died, but the girl lived on and eventually lost her green colour, and even learned to speak English.

The real kicker is what she told them about their origin.

She told them that they came from St. Martin's Land, an underground world where all the inhabitants were green. It gives me shivers just thinking about it.
